Why now? Business telephony services and telephone systems have changed significantly over the past few years and they continue to evolve, breaking down some of the barriers of traditional solutions for business transformation.

Traditionally, organisations had a phone line for making calls and an internet connection for things like email and internet browsing. A phone service would have been tied to a geographical area via the local telephone exchange, making deployments for multi-site businesses cumbersome and expensive.

Now, companies can deliver their voice services via their existing internet connection using IP Voice capable products such as SIP Trunking or Hosted Voice. Both can be deployed globally wherever an active internet connection is present, meaning various locations can be linked seamlessly via one, unified system.

The business case for these IP Voice services has been so compelling that over 45% of UK businesses have now adopted
them.*

Most businesses will be familiar with ISDN phone line and PBX Phone System, but with BT announcing that they will switch off the traditional ISDN network, in 2025, lots of businesses are looking to stay ahead of the curve working towards business transformation, and are evaluating alternative voice services sooner rather than later.

The Telecoms regulator said formal notification has been given to BT, requiring the “legal separation” of Openreach “after BT failed to offer voluntary proposals that address our competition concerns”.

Ofcom have ordered BT to separate from its Openreach network, as the company has failed to voluntarily address what Ofcom labelled “competition concerns”. The monopoly that BT holds over the UK’s broadband infrastructure will undergo a gradual break-up, but it is still seen as a victory for rivals to the telecoms giant.

Ofcom said creating a more independent Openreach, which works “in the interest of all providers, not just BT” was vital for improving broadband and telephone services across Britain.

In a statement, it said: “We are disappointed that BT has not yet come forward with proposals that meet our competition concerns.

“Some progress has been made, but this has not been enough, and action is required now to deliver better outcomes for phone and broadband users,” it said.

The plan is for Openreach to become a “distinct company” within BT, with more control over its own finances and an independent board.

It comes after BT appointed a former Ofcom director as the first chairman of its Openreach business in a bid to make the network division more independent.

Mike McTighe, who spent eight years on the board of the communications industry regulator before stepping down last year, will join Openreach in January, BT announced last night.

Responding to Ofcom’s announcement this morning of the legal separation, BT said: “We put forward proposals in July that we believe are fair and sustainable, and that meet Ofcom’s objectives without disproportionate costs.

“We are implementing these proposals, and have just appointed Mike McTighe to be the first chairman of Openreach. We are in discussions with Ofcom on two outstanding issues, the reporting line of the Openreach CEO and the form of legal incorporation.”

“We will continue to work with Ofcom to reach a voluntary settlement that is good for customers, shareholders, employees, pensioners and investment in the UK’s digital future.”

The reliability and speed of a business’s internet connectivity plays a pivotal role in its productivity and efficiency’s.

In today’s digital world, nothing is ever fast enough, no sooner had 4G began rolling out and people had started talking about 5G. Businesses desire to communicate and get answers instantly – real-time collaboration is now the norm. The growth of the internet has allowed E-commerce to revolutionise the way we promote and sell our products and services.

The use of “The Cloud” in business is massive, many business have used hosted email services like Hosted Exchange, Office365 and Gmail for years now, and are hooked on the anywhere, anytime, any device mantra these products live by.

Businesses are now eager to exploit the cloud’s – always on availability for other aspects of their business, like data storage (Box, SharePoint, Gdrive), Business Software (CRM such as Netsuite, Sage and Salesforce) and of course IP telephony (SIP Trunking and Hosted PBX).

Without scaremongering – it would be very safe to say that without an internet connection that modern businesses would grind to an abrupt halt!

So given that modern businesses depend on being online, it may seem strange that many of these organisations seem happy to select their broadband package on price alone – strange but true

Certainly, the advertising of broadband products for the residential market – with its fixation on monthly price, will have an effect on the mindsets of businesses when it comes putting a value on these products and services. One thing to consider is it might be inconvenient not being able to stream a movie at home, but if you couldn’t get access to telephones, email or internet at the office it would be slightly more of an issue.

I have prepared a proper summary of the options available for your consideration, when connecting your business to the internet. I have explored the differences between Broadband and Ethernet and give you some food for thought to consider why buying a cheap package could prove to be a false economy.
