Energy Savings Isn’t Just About Saving The World – It Will Save You A Fortune.

Last October, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (or IPCC) released a landmark climate report urging the governments of the world to reduce their carbon emissions drastically and quickly. News outlets across the globe followed with stories about just how urgently we needed to make changes and it all got a bit… scary.

In fact, the technology to meet the challenges ahead already exists. And adopting it could save your business a fortune.

But we’re here to tell you it shouldn’t be.

A fact not lost on Whitbread, the parent company of Premier Inn hotels.

The UK’s First Battery-powered Hotel
Just one of the innovations you’ll hear about over the next 12 months, is the UK’s first battery-powered hotel. A collaborative effort between Premier Inn and E.ON, The Gyle at Edinburgh Park will utilise a 3m3 lithium-ion battery which draws energy from the grid when prices are low and utilises that energy during periods of high consumption – wasting less energy and saving more money.

As anyone with multiple commercial properties knows, small savings soon add up. Bearing in mind that Premier Inn and E.ON are only trialling the battery at that one site, it’s predicted they will save more than £20,000 in the first 12 months. And considering Premier Inn has 750 hotels across the UK, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that if their predictions are right, a national roll-out could mean savings in the millions

As E.ON customer accounts director Richard Oakley points out, “Premier Inn is showing how hotel chains and large power users can further save money, reduce their carbon footprint and support the development of a lower-carbon, smarter energy grid in the UK.”

A Growing Trend
Premier Inn might be the first hotel in the UK to utilise a battery system, but they’re not the first business – they join an increasing number of level-headed companies that see a green future is also a lucrative one. B&Q and Veolia both installed battery powered systems in 2018.

And indeed at DB Group, we’re finding more and more, that one of the most efficient ways to save our clients’ money on their utilities is to look at the systems they currently have and see how much more efficient they could be (read more about how checking Ryden’s systems resulted in a huge saving).
